ASIACHEM recently published "2025 China biomass gasification process & project annual report".
Biomass gasification is the core technology of sustainable fuel industry, using the syngas (H2/CO/CO2) obtained by biomass gasification to produce green methanol, or to production sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by F-T synthesis reaction. In China and abroad, the planned green methanol and SAF projects would aggregate over CNY300bn capital investment, bringing gigantic business opportunities for the technology and equipment suppliers, as well as engineering the companies engaging in the biomass gasification industry chain.
Biomass gasification is similar to coal gasification, having the types of fixed bed gasification, fluidized bed gasification, gas flow bed gasification and thermal cracking gasification etc, all would include raw material pre-treatment, gasification and syngas cleaning units. China has cumulated deep technical expertise, abundant engineering and operation experiences, as well as powerful equipment manufacture capability in coal gasification field, providing the foundation for success of biomass gasification. Raw materials for biomass gasification may include agriculture waste, forestry waste and organic garbage from town area. Large size and stable supply of biomass raw material is the key to success of the project.
ASIACHEM data showed that, up to May 2025, more than 20 companies in China had carried out biomass gasification R&D and pilot unit tests. in 2025, several biomass gasifiers installed in green methanol projects would enter industrial verification stage. these demo units would provide valuable data and operation experience for consequent commercial size biomass gasifiers.
